Until recently we would have sourced nutrient dense evolutionary consistent foods but we now have options being manufactured in labs or in the form of supplemental ingredients to close gap discrepancies and attempt to mimic what nature already has perfectly accomplished. These ‘food scientists’ know exactly how to stimulate your dopamine response and harness our addictive behaviours to directly fill their revenue stream. They even drive marketing campaigns around these concepts, ‘Bet you can’t eat just one…’ Your body’s response to these foods also disrupts the natural response to positive supportive foods cascading with continuous cravings and depletion of available nutrients. Those empty calories leave your body starving and expecting more in response to the amount of digestion required. Typically, we look at eliminating damaging seed oils, grains(including whole or otherwise) and refined sugars. Basically, if it’s in a package with a label then it most likely contains one or all of these ingredients.
Sleep is another critical component to achieving Functional Competence. If you are not waking up feeling completely restored and ready to begin your day, then something is off with your sleep. If your mouth is dry when you wake, that’s an issue. If you watch screens before bed and not cognizant of light sources and how they effect our circadian rhythm, including luminaries in your home and the sun, then we have another problem. Melatonin and Cortisol are opposing hormones that directly effect this rhythm and your ability to get a proper night’s sleep. We haven’t even discussed Vitamin D and embracing the sun, sunsets, sunrises and the natural spectrum we see from the sun and how our pineal gland expects these differing spectrums. If you want to perform optimally both cognitively and athletically you need to grow and recover physically as well as remove the toxin buildup in your brain while you cycle through the different stages of sleep. Standard of care for western allopathic medicine is unfortunately a business, a business that is built on referrals and prescription notes and not actually ‘healing’ a patient.
